Finish the Year With Purpose: 4 Goal-Setting Tips for REALTORS®

The final months of the year can feel like a sprint. Between helping consumers navigate the market, keeping up with transactions and preparing for the holidays, REALTORS® have plenty of items competing for their attention.

That’s why fall is the best time to rethink what it means to finish the year well, before the days and weeks fill up with projects.

Here are four areas to consider as you do your year-end planning.

1. Finish the Year With Purpose

Take stock of what you realistically want to accomplish before the new year. Then break those down into one or two priorities that matter most. A goal that fits your schedule is more likely to get completed than one based on an ideal version of December that doesn't account for holiday and year-end commitments.

Take a realistic look at your schedule and consider:

  • What is already on your calendar?Account for upcoming transactions, appointments, holiday events, travel and other commitments.
  • What truly needs to be finished this year? Separate time-sensitive priorities from tasks that can comfortably move into 2027.
  • What can be simplified? Look for ways to streamline routine tasks, batch similar work or eliminate lower-priority activities.
  • What do you want to make time for? Your goals should leave room for the personal commitments and downtime that matter to you.
  • What would make you feel good about the year? Choose goals that reflect meaningful progress.

Make your goals specific enough that you know what success looks like. A shorter list of meaningful goals can be much more useful than a long list that leaves you drained and overwhelmed.

2. Make Time for the Holidays

The holidays can be one of the busiest — and most joyful — times of year. Rather than hoping you’ll find time to step away and enjoy, decide in advance when you will.

That might mean blocking off certain evenings, taking a few full days away from work or setting expectations early about when you will and won't be available.

Consider making a few festive commitments to yourself:

  • Schedule time with family and friends.
  • Pause work notifications during planned personal time.
  • Identify which responsibilities truly need your attention during the holidays — and which can wait.

3. Strengthen Relationships Before the Year Ends

The end of the year presents a natural opportunity to reconnect. Think beyond your immediate pipeline and consider the relationships you've built throughout the year.

Reach out to both people you haven't spoken with recently and those who made a lasting impact on you this year. Send a thoughtful note. Check in with a past consumer. Thank the professionals who have supported your business.

These don't have to be elaborate gestures. A handwritten holiday card, a Friday morning coffee connect or even setting a date in the new year to catch up are all ways to foster both new and longstanding relationships with intention.

4. Start Planning Your 2027 Goals

Don't wait until January to decide what you want the new year to look like. Set aside some time before the holidays are in full swing to think about 2027.

You don't need to have every detail figured out. The goal is to enter January with a direction rather than starting from scratch.

You might consider goals related to:

  • Your annual transaction volume
  • Lead generation and relationship building
  • Marketing and social media
  • Professional development
  • Work-life balance

One way to set meaningful goals is to do a year-in-review. What worked well for you this year? What fell short? And equally important, what made your business feel better in the day-to-day?

Finish the Year With Intention

The end of the year doesn't have to be a race to check every box. For REALTORS®, it can be an opportunity to take stock, focus on what matters most and make thoughtful plans for the year ahead.

A little intentional planning now can help you close out the year feeling accomplished and refreshed. Then, when January arrives, you'll be ready to get to work with a clear plan and goals that reflect where you want your business to go.
